Chico Creek "Time Oil" Property Acquisition (A2K SRFB 05-1389)

This is a proposal to acquire a 5.5-acre parcel that contains 2,200 feet of riparian habitat along both sides of Chico Creek. This parcel is the only reach of Chico Creek in the urbanized part of the watershed that has retained access to its floodplain, its large woody debris and a complex profile of pools and riffles. Chico Creek is East Kitsap's most productive salmon stream. This parcel is located immediately upstream of the 5th round SRFB funded Chico Creek Instream Project, securing and adding value to the on-going restoration.
Currently there are patches of invasive, exotic plant species throughout the property. Funding would allo.....

Chico Creek - Kitty Hawk Road Culvert Removal (RN Chico Kitty Hawk Road)

The "Chico Estuary Culvert Removal" effort is a subset of the Chico Estuary Restoration Project. The overall project's purposes are (1) to remove Kitty Hawk Drive culvert--a partial fish blockage to 17 miles of prime salmon spawning and rearing habitat (68 miles of streams altogether); (2) to restore 1.2 acres of Puget Sound estuarine habitat by removal of Kitty Hawk road fill; (3) to restore natural ecological processes (remove bulkhead and invasive vegetation); and (4) to facilitate public use and enjoyment of the site.

The Chico Watershed Planning Project
Executive Summary
The watershed has become the focus of many recent planning and research projects because the water that flows over and through the land is the one piece of our landscape that ties us all together. Over the past fifty years we have learned that what we do on the land will have an impact on the stream, and will affect all those who live in the watershed. That is why Kitsap County has begun looking at planning by watersheds.
The Chico Creek watershed has been chosen to be the first area of study because of its healthy salmon runs, its large tracts of forested land, its two large lakes,.....

Chico Creek Instream Habitat Restoration Phase 1 (RI Srfb 04-1209)

The stream channel within the project area has been historically straightened and armored to protect existing structures and golf course property. This has unnaturally increased the rate of entrenchment in the streambed, disconnecting the creek from it’s floodplain, consequently increasing velocity and shear stress which has resulted in the annual scour of salmon redds and associated spawning gravels. Large woody debris is also absent within this section of the creek, further reducing the formation and maintenance of pool habitat, as well as, reducing the stability of streambed materials.
There are few resting areas in this reach for adu.....

Chico Creek Instream Restoration Phase 2 Design and Construction (RI 08-1639 + 09-1672)

Chico Creek, which flows to Dyes Inlet in Kitsap County, supports one of the largest runs of fall chum salmon (30,000-80,000 fish/year) in the west Puget Sound, and also supports coho, steelhead, cutthroat trout and occasional stray Chinook salmon. Dyes Inlet, as well as most of Puget Sound, is also classified as Critical Area Habitat for Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orca).
Originally, the project included the entire section of Chico Creek as it flows through the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. Due to site complications from severe flooding conditions in December 2007 and due to a shortfall in funding, the project was phased in the.....

Chico Creek and Estuary Restoration -- Survey Phase (RN SRFB 07-1729 )

The “Chico Estuary Restoration-Survey Phase” project will contribute to the restoration of an ecoregionally-significant pocket estuary and salmon stream in Kitsap County by accomplishing some pre-design tasks needed to estimate the costs involved in the design and construction of removing two major barriers at the mouth of Chico Creek. This project contributes to on-going efforts by Kitsap County, WSDOT, WDFW, Recreation and Conservation Office, SRFB, Suquamish Tribe, and others.
This project will accomplish three major elements: (1) topographic survey of Kitty Hawk Drive, the mouth of Chico Creek and portions of Chico Estuary in support o.....

Chico Creek and Estuary: Ross-Owen Project (A1K srfb 07-1843)

The “Chico Estuary Acquisition-Owen & Ross Project” is a non-capital project that will contribute to the conservation and restoration of an ecoregionally-significant pocket estuary and salmon stream by accomplishing the pre-purchase tasks (landowner willingness, appraisal, survey, etc.) for the County to purchase a 1.1 acre parcel with 133' of healthy Chico Estuary shoreline ("Owen parcel"), and (2) creating an access easement on a 3.23 acre parcel ("Ross parcel") to enable the correction of two major barriers at the mouth of Chico Creek (SR3 and Kitty Hawk Drive). This project contributes to on-going efforts by Kitsa.....
