Schedule Start Date: 1/1/2008 End Date: 5/26/2009
Priority 1
Category Category: Acquisition/Restoration (Combination)
The objective of this project is to acquire, protect and restore 127.5 acres of South Fork Nooksack wetland and tributary habitat that is heavily impacted by a hybrid poplar plantation. The property includes 7,500 lineal feet of Landingstrip Creek and 2 unnamed tributaries and borders 2,100 feet of the South Fork River. The project will protect 3.3 miles of riparian habitat along the South Fork and Landingstrip Creek along with restoration of fish passage, instream habitat and riparian function along Landingstrip. This project will also restore wetland functions to one of the largest historic wetlands in the South Fork Valley by restoring natural vegetation and drainage. This will help improve base flow and lower stream temperatures in the river, two main limiting factors to Chinook recovery in the basin. Two fish passage barriers located on the site and identified for immediate action by the WRIA #1 Fish Passage Barrier Inventory will be removed. Fish presence in the project reach includes ESA listed Spring Chinook, and Bull trout, Coho and Chum salmon, steel head and cutthroat trout. This request seeks funding to complete previously approved SRFB Project 07-1842 which was only partially funded in 2007. In order to complete the project as designed additional funds for acquisition are needed.
