The Whatcom County Noxious Weed Control Board will use this grant to continue survey and management of knotweed on the upper reaches of the Nooksack River. Knotweed is an invasive plant that alters the function of river ecosystems, affecting fish and the food web on which they depend. Management for the next three seasons will focus on upstream patches, working systematically downstream. Work will be done along the north fork downstream to Maple Falls, along the middle fork downstream to Canyon Creek and along the south fork downstream to Hutchinson Creek. The ongoing survey of knotweed sites shows scattered populations that could expand easily if left unmanaged.
