South Fork Nooksack: Camp 18 Design
#14-LNR-RCO1868 #14-LNR-RCO1868
Organization WRIA 1 Salmon Recovery Board (LE)
Status Completed (Project Funded)
Schedule Start Date: 10/1/2014 End Date: 7/29/2016
Priority 1
Category Category: Non-Capital Projects
DESCRIPTION
This project seeks to provide a preliminary design for the remainder of the Lyman Pass reach not covered as part of existing grant 12-1515 to include the section known as Camp 18. The project design will require several steps, although some of the background work and data collection has already been completed. This information can be referenced in the Upper South Fork Project Design Report (Maudlin and Brown 2009), which selected the highest ranking projects identified in the Upper South Fork Assessment and developed a conceptual design for them. Additional steps include evaluation of the conceptual design, a geomorphic and hydraulic assessment and report, developing engineering design parameters (i.e., scour depth, log sizes, ELJ structure dimensions and locations) for the project, developing preliminary design alternatives, selecting a preferred alternative, providing a basis of design report, initiating permit consultation, and a construction cost estimate.

GOAL
Increase key habitat quality and diversity by creating up to four primary pool habitat units within five years through the placement of engineered logjam structures.
GOAL
Improve floodplain channel connectivity for rearing by connecting up to 1.03 miles of off-channel habitat through bed aggradation and increased water surface elevation.
GOAL
Increase thermal refugia for salmonid species by creating up to 5 primary pool habitat units within five years in areas of cool water refuge through the placement of ELJs.
GOAL
Increase holding and rearing habitat by creating up to 11 secondary pool habitat units in other areas.
GOAL
Increase stability of existing gravel bars for island formation and anabranching planform over the next 10 years.
