This is a proposal to acquire a 5.5-acre parcel that contains 2,200 feet of riparian habitat along both sides of Chico Creek. This parcel is the only reach of Chico Creek in the urbanized part of the watershed that has retained access to its floodplain, its large woody debris and a complex profile of pools and riffles. Chico Creek is East Kitsap's most productive salmon stream. The stream channel within the project area has been historically straightened and armored to protect existing structures and golf course property. This has unnaturally increased the rate of entrenchment in the streambed, disconnecting the creek from it’s floodplain, consequently increasing velocity and shear stress which has resulted in the annual scour of salmon redds and associated spawning gravels. Chico Creek, which flows to Dyes Inlet in Kitsap County, supports one of the largest runs of fall chum salmon (30,000-80,000 fish/year) in the west Puget Sound, and also supports coho, steelhead, cutthroat trout and occasional stray Chinook salmon. Dyes Inlet, as well as most of Puget Sound, is also classified as Critical Area Habitat for Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orca).
